Meet Our Founder
Formerly a musician and fire rescue veteran, Shannon didn’t set out to become a social media expert.
But in 2015, when she took on the role of PR director for The Tin Pan, a Richmond-based live music venue, Shannon was faced with the challenge of building an online presence for a brand-new business. That’s when she turned to social media as an accessible, cost-effective solution.
It wasn’t long before Shannon started seeing results, and her innovative strategies quickly gained traction. Because of her efforts and creativity, the Tin Pan became a cornerstone of the local music scene. After seeing the impact she’d made, Shannon was hooked! Not long after, she founded The Social Ginger in December 2015 to help other small businesses harness the power of social media to grow their companies.
Since then, Shannon and her team have helped hundreds of clients increase their visibility and revenue through customized social media strategies.
When she’s not leading The Social Ginger, Shannon enjoys spending time with her wife, Carolee, exploring Richmond’s bike trails, and hiking with her two rescue dogs Ella and Jasper.

Mason Flippo is more than just a fellow “ginger”, and we are so excited to have his expertise in business, marketing, video, and photography (we got a good one on our team)! Rumor has it he can also play piano by ear so stay tuned for a TSG band. Mason is both incredibly easy going and eager to take on any challenge. His ambition is shown by the fact that he and his friend started a small business his senior year at VCU, and carried it out for three years. Mason is excited to continue fine-tuning his entrepreneurial spirit and also looks forward to mastering the management and analytics side of social media. He is creative in just about everything and is always diving into a new hobby…ask him about his woodworking or bonsai trees! Mason has always kept his childlike wonder and can still make a pretty amazing fort like he did when he was a kid. If you ever see Mason around, ask him to do anything outdoors in Richmond. Chances are he’ll say yes!
(For all of you who were wondering, just because Mason is also a ginger doesn’t mean he is related to Shannon…but he does fit in nicely with the TSG team!)
Elizabeth Phillips, known to friends and family as “EJ”, is a writer, artist, and marketer. At her core she is a story teller. Sometimes she uses words, sometimes a paintbrush, and sometimes pithy instagram captions, meta descriptions, and an infographic. Mostly, she is trying to make you laugh.
She earned her B.A. in Communications and Creative Writing at UNC (Go Heels!), studied art and multimedia design at The Art Institute of Colorado, and earned her Master’s in Education from Union Theological Seminary. She comes to The Social Ginger with a variety of Google and HubSpot certifications, including Google Analytics, Digital Marketing, and SEO. Her sense of humor helps us breathe life into industries that others might find “boring.
Outside of work at TSG, she is usually listening to an audiobook, painting, or writing for two local magazines. While not as musical as the other TSG team members, she can sing. Her children tell her that what she lacks in talent, she makes up for in volume. She loves getting out in Richmond to see live music, musical theater, or comedy shows. The stories she is most proud of shaping are that of her 4 teenagers who constantly help her hone her ability to engage an uninterested audience.
